Youth in Action!

When teens make the news, it's almost always for one reason––because they've gotten in trouble. News outlets aren't interested in giving exposure to teens who do good things for their communities, and this gives some adults the mistaken impression that today's kids have nothing to offer. But the truth is that today's teens are advanced in ways that many grown-ups can't understand, which makes it easy to overlook the real contributions teens make. If we don't want to raise yet another generation of cynics, it's time to start giving kids their due. This is what we do here!

According to data presented during an annual meeting in San Diego of the American Psychological Assn., the number of college students who suffer from a serious mental illness is rising. The data came from a study that consisted of 3,265 college students who used on campus counseling services between the years of September 1997 and August 2009.
In the year 1998, 93% of the students who were seeking counseling were diagnosed with one mental disorder. That number compares to an increase of 96% of students in 2009...

 

In the United States of America there are 42 births per 1,000 women––ages 15-19.
Our high teen birth rate might have to do with the fact that sex education may not have had the impact that many assume or expect in averting teen pregnancy. In fact, new international data shows that teens in the U.S. are having babies at a much higher rate than teens in many other countries, regardless of sex education programs received in those countries...

 

As the recession continues, many budget cuts occurring nationwide are now including our education systems. States like Georgia and Illinois are among the many states that have been cutting the budget for public education annually. This year however, many students showed their support for their favorite extracurricular activities, by getting together and protesting. The protests consisted of “walk outs” and organized demonstrations outside many downtown government offices where students, along with the support of their teachers plead for a return of their funding...
