alt“Giving Works” is a project that eBay developed in an effort to provide financial aid – relief- to charities around the world. If you shop on eBay you are probably familiar with this effort. When purchasing an item, at checkout, you are given the option to check a box that means you want to add $1 to your transaction that will be donated to a displayed charity cause.

eBay has a major impact on the buy and sell business around the world...

Millions of items are posted for sale and have been sold. eBay assumes this responsibility because of its strong influence on its users and their genuine love for humanity. There are many ways that eBay users can donate money to Giving Works. If you’re a seller, you can give from 10% to 100% of your profits; you can make immediate payments with PayPal, or buy from sellers who give some of their profits to charity.

Over $174,800,000 has been raised through Giving Works so far. Look to the stars  which is an online watchdog site that focuses on celebrities that give has reported the support that Ellen DeGeneres has given to Giving Works, and the support of many other celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Usher, Common, and Nick Jonas as well.

Though it may seem like many people are in favor of this project there are some eBay members who attack this charity project. In 2001, eBay launched a charity project hoping to raise $100,000,000 in 100 days for the disaster relief of 9/11. Sellers complained that they couldn’t compete with this charity project, and claimed those sellers who were donating their profits could afford to do so, but that others who rely on their sales on eBay to live on couldn’t donate their profits, especially with the holiday season coming around the corner.

eBay users claimed that eBay didn’t think twice about this and just launched the disaster relief project without taking into account how it would affect many of its long time and loyal users. Some users responded by saying those attacking this project were being self centered and they shouldn’t be complaining about it because of their fortunes made through eBay. Though that is a good point, in my opinion, eBay has a network full of users, and that’s what it’s based on. Like any successful business, you shouldn’t upset your customers.

Had eBay wanted to help that’s understandable and great though the way they went about it I think was a bit inconsiderate of its user’s finances and profits.
