People for the ethical treatment of animals (PETA) is the largest animal rights organization in the world and has over 2 million supporters and members worldwide. They strive for the ethical treatment of animals in factory farms, the clothing industry, laboratories and the entertainment fields. They also focus on many other issues such as the abuse of domestic animals, birds, and the cruel killing of beavers.
Eva Mendes and Pamela Anderson are amongst the dozens of celebrities who have worked with PETA to promote animal rights in famous campaigns such as the “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” campaign...
Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, has successfully driven the spirit and vision of this organization from the beginning as the co-founder. Many historical cases dealing with animal rights and exposing those who are cruel to them have been brought forth by this nonprofit organization, and has solidified PETA’s vision and has brought them a great deal of support. It’s no wonder why PETA is the largest organization in the world of its kind.
But of course, when you have an organization that operates on an annual budget of millions of dollars and has had the success PETA has had, people are bound to get critical. People are bound to oppose PETA’s vision, not because they’re not supportive of animal rights, but because of the way the organization operates. Reports say that according to government documents PETA employees have “killed” 19,000 dogs and cats. Groups have formed online to get this type of information to the public with a message that “PETA kills animals”.
The organization defends itself explaining that the process of euthanizing (which many refer to as “being put down”) is painless to the animals, and is only done when an animal that is rescued is not healthy or considered “not adoptable.”
Those opposing PETA have gone to great lengths to complain about the organization's agenda. Many claim that celebrities who lend their voice to PETA do not really care about animal rights, stating
“they themselves eat animals, go fishing, wear fur, leather and promote a lifestyle of animal consumption to the public in their everyday life.”
For years now controversy has followed PETA and its decisions. PETA however continues to do the same work and is enjoying continued success.
Just how true are the allegations against PETA?
